BIOIDENTICAL HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY FOR MEN & WOMEN
Bioidentical hormones, such as estrogens, progesterone, testosterone, thyroid, and adrenal hormones, have the same chemical structure as those made by the human body in order to fully replication function. Researchers have long held that there are significant differences between hormones that are natural to humans and synthetic derivations. The goals of any form of hormone replacement therapy are to re-establish hormonal balance by providing an adequate supply of the deficient hormone resulting in normal physiologic effects, alleviate the symptoms caused by the decline in hormone production, and give back the protective benefits which were originally provided by naturally occurring hormones. Every person is unique, therefore, it is a sensible approach for pharmacists, patients, and doctors to work together to customize a BHRT regimen. The precise components of each person’s therapy need to be determined after a medical history, laboratory testing, symptoms, and physical exam have been considered..
Pain management is essential because pain prevents patients from working productively, or taking pleasure in their activities of daily life. Compounded topical or transdermal pain formulations can address acute or chronic pain needs which may have a myriad of causes and perpetuating factors requiring a customized treatment regimen to meet specific patient needs. Optimal treatment may involve the use of medications that possess some combination of analgesic, anesthetic, anticonvulsant, antiviral, antidepressant, and NMDA antagonist action. By combining various agents which utilize different mechanisms to alter the sensation of pain, physicians have found that smaller concentrations of each medication can be used. Topical and transdermal creams and gels can be formulated to provide high local concentrations at the site of application or in a base that will allow systemic absorption. Side effects associated with oral administration can often be avoided when medications are used topically. Studies suggest that there are no great restrictions on the type of drug that can be incorporated into a properly compounded transdermal delivery system.
Trying to administer medication to an animal is not always easy and commercial animal medications may be available in only one size or strength. We can work with you and your veterinarian to create a formulation for your pet that contains the most appropriate dosage for your pet by making it easier to administer and often times more economical. Some examples include flavored medications like tuna flavored suspensions for cats, combination formulas, or transdermal creams & gels. Transdermal delivery is particularly useful for pets who should not be stressed due to various medical conditions.
An excipient is any inert substance added to a medication formulation to confer suitable consistency or form to the active drug. Excipients may include artificial coloring or flavoring agents, diluents, binders, lubricants, and disintegrators. There is growing evidence of adverse reactions to the so-called inert substances despite the general perception to the contrary. We can work with you and your healthcare provider to compound medications that are free of problem causing excipients such as dyes, sugar, gluten, lactose, alcohol, etc.
